Description:
I was delighted when long-time friends Nicole and Jon asked me to compose a fanfare for horn ensemble (Nicole is a horn player) for the official opening of the Seppeltsfield Road Distillery. My approach was to use significant dates for Nicole and Jon: the opening 6/8 and 9/8 pattern signifies their wedding date, and I assigned scale tones to other numbers like the date they first broke ground on their property, their house number, and birth dates. I also asked them to say “Seppelstfield Road Distillers” out loud and used that rhythm, which can be heard in bar 42. Eight horns performed the Fanfare on the night, and their business is thriving. I’d like to think my Fanfare helped, but that’s probably not the case!
