Robert Sims is a freelance musician who held the position of Head of Brass at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1993 until 2008. He began his career as Second Trumpet in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (1976–1990) and has had a wealth of experience playing many musical genres with groups including Orchestra Victoria, The Australian Pops Orchestra, and Cathedral Brass. Robert is a highly regarded brass educator specialising in the trumpet. He has contributed to the music programs at Monash University, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and Victorian College of the Arts, as well as other tertiary education institutions around the country. He has worked as a guest tutor with Orchestra Victoria’s MOVE program and Melbourne Youth Music. Composition is another interest that he has developed over many years, initially through writing works for brass but now also for other instrumental combinations. Robert’s frequently recorded works include his Four Pieces for Brass Trio, Australian Folk Song Suite, Fanfare, and his 2005 work Chilago. The latter is included on the album Journey, featuring contemporary music for trumpet and organ recorded by Anthony Pope and Dominic Perissinotto. Robert’s pieces entitled Tuba Folk and Lachlan Tiger are in the AMEB brass syllabus and included in their brass publications.
