Description:
This three-movement work was composed in Brisbane in 1999. It incorporates passages played on the open F-horn harmonics with valved horn writing. At times, the open harmonics are doubled an octave lower, requiring the lower player to bend the notes to match the intonation of the “out-of-tune” harmonics. The relationship between the opening themes of the fast outer movements is clear, while the less-recognisable inversion of this theme forms the basis of the slow, polyphonic, “Lullaby” movement in between.
